Corruption and Success

The Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2001 established an Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to prosecute individuals, government officials, and businesses accused of corruption.

  • Over 19 offenses are punishable under the Act, including accepting or giving gratification, fraudulent acquisition of property, and concealment of fraud.
  • Nigerian law stipulates that giving and receiving bribes are criminal offenses and, as such, are not tax deductible.
  • The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was established also to prosecute individuals involved in financial crime and other acts of economic sabotage.
  • Nigeria is a pilot participant in the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, which will help ensure audits of Nigeria's oil accounts. Nigeria is a signatory to the UN Anti-corruption Convention.
